In late 2024, while researching for my new column Hidden Wealth in Beauty for Master-Insight, an online media platform in Hong Kong, I was deeply moved by the news of Dr. Lui Che Woo's passing. Dr. Lui, the founder and chairman of K. Wah and Galaxy Entertainment Group, lived an extraordinary 95 years. Having had the privilege of working closely with him for over a decade, his philosophies on both business and life continue to resonate with me, even after relocating to Singapore.
I vividly remember Dr. Lui’s emphasis on the phrase “Guaranteed Real” (保證真嘢). As a prominent business leader, he rarely used technical jargon when speaking to his management team, opting instead for simple yet powerful expressions that made a lasting impact.

During my time in Corporate Affairs, I was often involved in organizing large-scale events. Dr. Lui had a particular preference for showcasing authentic images of the company’s global development projects. When I transitioned from corporate communications to gemstone appraisal a few years ago, many friends were curious about the shift. For me, it felt like a natural progression—a way to find balance and serenity as I entered a new phase of life.
Initially, I was drawn to gemstones by their vibrant beauty and romantic allure. But as I delved deeper into the study of Gemology, the reality proved far more challenging than I expected. The discipline is deeply rooted in scientific principles such as geology, physics, chemistry, and optics. The use of advanced gem-testing instruments like microscopes, polariscope, refractometers, and loupes is essential for proper identification. As someone without a scientific background, these tools initially felt foreign. Along with technical expertise, a broader understanding of aesthetics, fashion trends, and art history also proves valuable in helping clients make the right choices.
To obtain internationally recognized certification as a gemologist, one must undergo extremely rigorous training and examinations.
Zero Tolerance for Errors
Gemology is a quest for truth, achieved through systematic, scientific identification processes. Lab work can feel like detective work—gathering evidence until a conclusion is reached. To be proficient, gemology students must examine at least 500 stones before qualifying for the final exam, a process that sharpens the ability to distinguish subtle differences in color, clarity, and other characteristics. For beginners, identifying a single stone can take hours; but with hundreds of hours of practice, the goal is to complete each examination within 20 minutes with 100% accuracy.
Yes, there is ZERO tolerance for errors in Gemology. A single misjudgement—whether confusing a fake stone for a genuine one or failing to recognize an authentic gem—can lead to significant financial loss or even legal repercussions. The stakes are high, and precision is paramount.
